Pioneer founder: Fr James A Cullen
The Association has as its chief aim the promotion of temperance and sobriety, with prayer and self-sacrifice as its principal means. The members use their independence of alcohol to engage in good work and the organisation of counter-attractions to drinking. There are 200,000 members in Ireland and 300,000 abroad. The Association was founded by Fr James A Cullen in 1898.

For the founder, Fr. Cullen, a Pioneer is a committed catholic, faithful to the teachings of the church and dedicated to living out the message of the Gospel in their daily lives. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus helps us to develop our relationship with and understanding of God, to become better Christians and to enable us to reach our final destination: Heaven. More recently, the Association offers membership to christians of other denominations who accept 'love of Christ' as the principal motive for abstinence.
