The 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus has ended. The final Mass was celebrated on Saturday 12 November, six weeks after the Congregation’s opening Mass on Sunday 2 October. During the Congregation, Jesuit delegates from around the world elected Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, of the Venezuelan Province as their Superior General. They also elected his ‘assistants’. Father Arturo now leads the largest order of priests and brothers in the Roman Catholic Church. The election was followed by a memorable visit from Pope Francis who is also a Jesuit. During the six weeks, delegates discussed a variety of topics regarding the mission of the society in the 21st century. The fruit of these deliberations will be a ‘decree’, soon to be published, and addressing the general theme of the ‘Life and Mission of the Society’.
