BILL TONER SJ :: There are two ways of tending a garden: either you throw out all the damaged plants and keep everything neat and tidy, or you nurse the damaged plants back to health and put up with a bit of mess. The two dominant images of God are similarly distinguishable. The first kind of gardener resembles the God of reason, the second the God of revelation. In fact, scripture emphatically insists on the latter image of God. God shows meticulous care and love for every person, especially those most ravaged in the earthly garden – the weak, the poor, the lost, and the sick.
