The joy of running

May 14, 2015 in Patrick Muldoon

I love running. I have been running regularly now for many years. My love of running began when I was nine years old and I haven’t fallen out of love with my favourite pastime since. Running sets me free, it declutters my mind, and it connects me with God. Running helps me to let go of the anxieties and struggles of my life and to leave everything in his hands.

Through running I am able to leave aside the cares and concerns of my day and enter into an interior dialogue with God. In the steps I take as I run, I become conscious of his presence and allow him to speak to my heart, because he is present in all things. I enter the stillness of that presence and I think of all the things that I am thankful for.

I think of the people and places I’ve connected with through running and I thank God for all of my running days. I think of the races I’ve competed in and how it has brought me great joy to achieve some of my running goals. I think of the many friendships which I have made through running and how I cherish them.

Now the focus of my running is on enjoyment. I run for the love of running and it helps maintain my physical, mental and spiritual health. Running brings me great joy. It grounds me in the present moment and it gives me interior peace and gratitude for the gift of each new day and for the gift of life. Thank you God for the gift of running!
