A message from the Provincial

January 19, 2008 in General, News

dbk_4317.jpgA very special day for Jesuits around the world and for John Dardis SJ, Irish Provincial in Rome.

The election hall today was a scene of tears and great emotion as the 29th successor to Ignatius Loyola was chosen by electors gathered from all continents.

The new Fr General, Adolfo Nicolas, is a man of great personal warmth combined with all the graciousness of the East. He is someone who has lived in different cultures and so has had to understand those different from himself. He is a man open to the world, a man of 71 with fresh ideas. He is also someone with theological expertise, having been a professor of systematic theology in Sophia university, Tokyo. And he has experience of working on the frontline – he worked in a poor immigrant parish in Tokyo for many years.

On behalf of all the Irish Jesuits, I wish him well in his new role. I assure him of the support and prayers of us all.

John
