“Once you start praying you’ll never be bored again!” That’s what Irish Jesuit novice Niall Leahy told Sharon DiCecco in a wide-ranging interview on the Toronto-based religious radio station ‘Radio Maria’, on Thursday 7 October. Speaking by phone from the novitiate in Birmingham, he told the story of his vocation, “which my mother says was evident when I was 15 but I didn’t recognise til I was 27!” He recounted why he chose to join the Jesuits – how he was impressed by their commitment to the poor and by the variety of their apostolates, including the prayer website Sacred Space. He also spoke about the impact of the Pope’s visit to Birmingham on both himself and the wider British public, and about his life now as a novice, studying, praying and working in prison and at a HIV Aids respite centre.
