  • lapsley_01Jesuits in the North are involved in a groundbreaking international conference  on ‘Trauma and Spirituality’, in the Europa Hotel, Belfast, Wednesday 9 March -Saturday 13 March. The conference will bring together health professionals, trauma survivors  and faith leaders  from all faiths to try and develop a holisitic approach to recovery from trauma and explore the role spirituality can play in the healing process. Speakers will include  South African Anglican Priest Fr Michael Lapsley (pictured here), who suffered personal injury in the anti-apartheid struggle and Ray Helmick SJ, ( Boston College) who spent many years in the North during the troubles.   • It is the 100th International Women’s Day as we go to press, and the Irish Council for Justice and Peace has called for greater protection for women from sexual violence in war. Michael O’Sullivan SJ is developing a theology on the same theme, with a book, which will be launched on 3rd May. More about this later.
  • A leadership team of eight young people gathered in Magis Ireland on 26 February for a second orientation and preparation day ahead of the World Youth Day event in the summer. The team includes young lay men and women, Jesuit scholastics and novice and a Loreto novice. Magis Ireland hopes to bring a large group of young people for the 6-day festival in which 1-2 million young catholics (18-30 yrs) will gather in Spain to nourish, challenge and develop their faith. 3,000 young people from around the world will also take part in an 11-day Ignatian programme before the WYD in Madrid.   • Colaiste Iognaid convincingly beat Salerno College 6-0 inn Dangean Sports Grounds on 8th March to claim the Connaught Cup. At times it looked too easy for the Jes and they took their foot off the gas after 3-0; Salerno falied to capitalise on this however, and allowed in three more goals. The all-Ireland finals are in Limerick in two weeks time. View photos here.
