Struggling to come to terms with his brother’s suicide, Jesuit priest Brendan McManus decides to walk the Camino de Santiago, the famous Spanish pilgrimage route, where he undergoes a profoundly transformative journey of rebirth and renewal that moves through grief and anger to hope, gratitude and acceptance. Faced with injury, the author breaks every rule of the Camino in his determination to reach Santiago de Compostela. He seeks understanding in the spirituality of St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, but in the end it is the simple ritual of burning his brother’s T-shirt at the end of his journey that allows for a cathartic release of his grief, agonizing but ultimately freeing.

Redemption Road is written with wisdom and compassion as the author’s humility and capacity for reflection make for a truly inspiring and enlightening journey for the reader. He describes with honesty, humour and great humanity both the hardships and the moments of joy and beauty experienced along this long, hard road to recovery. This is a book for all of us who wish to think more deeply about the meaning of loss and death and discover how such devastating experiences enrich and shape our own journeys through life.

Brendan McManus is a Jesuit priest who currently works in spirituality in Belfast. He is an experienced author and blogger and a talented amateur photographer. He is also a fluent Spanish speaker from his time studying theology in Colombia. Before entering the priesthood he worked in IT. He is involved with the Irish suicide prevention charity Console, becoming their biggest single fundraiser with the sponsorship raised for his Camino walk.

The author’s royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to Console. http://redemptionroadcamino.com/
